I always need storage so I decided to come up with this basic fabric bin.  This bin is terrific for storing just about anything.  It is very sturdy and strong.  I used a utility fabric with a quilting cotton lining.  If you need to purchase fabric for this project I highly recommend Fabric.com and Hobby Lobby for a great selection of appropriate fabrics.  In addition I used leather handles made from basic leather strapping which are riveted to the body of the bin.  I recommend Michael’s for this leather strip.  This post contains affiliate links that if you click on them and make a purchase I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Step 1: DIY Fabric Storage Bin

Cut a length of fabric as large as you want your bucket to be.  I cut mine 31.5″ x 10.5″.  Cut a lining piece and a piece of interfacing the same size.  You can make these buckets any size you want.

Step 2: DIY Fabric Storage Bin

Fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of the canvass fabric.  Sew the short edges together using a 1/4″ seam allowance.  You should have a tube the size you want your bucket to be.

Step 3: DIY Fabric Storage Bin

Place the tube onto a piece of canvass and draw a circle for the bottom.  Don’t forget to add the seam allowance.  Sew the bottom to the tube.  You should have a bucket with a bottom at this point. Turn right side out.

Step 4: DIY Fabric Storage Bin

Repeat the above steps for the lining fabric so that you have an identical bucket but leave an opening in the bottom for turning.

Step 5: DIY Fabric Storage Bin

Place the canvass bucket into the lining bucket right sides together and sew around the top.

Step 7: DIY Fabric Storage Bin

Push the lining bucket into the canvass bucket and press.  Topstitch around the top of the bucket. Hand stitch the opening closed using ladder stitch.

Step 8: DIY Fabric Storage Bin

Cut the leather strap in half.  The two halves will make the handles.  Loop the handles so that the ends are 2″ below the rim of the basket and the ends are 1″ apart.  Repeat for the other side of the bucket.  Clip with wonder clips. If you don’r have wonder clips you can purchase them from Amazon at this wonder clips link.

Step 9: DIY Fabric Storage Bin

Using a leather hole punch or an awl, punch a hole through the leather and the canvass and lining fabrics.  Insert a rivet and set with a rivet setting tool.  Repeat this process for all four rivets. Once the rivets have been set your DIY fabric storage basket is complete.
