My Trip to Ireland

My Trip to Ireland

Cliffs of Moher

I loved my trip to Ireland.  I just returned from a trip to Ireland where I traveled and met new friends and family.  It was a wonderful trip filled with family, friends and fun and I would like to share some of my adventures with you.

We were fortunate enough to be able to stay with my husband’s cousin Brendan in the old family home in Fairymount, Roscommon, Ireland.  While Brendan has a regular job he also runs a small farm with cows and donkeys and dogs.  My favorite were the three donkeys.  They were so friendly they would come up to you and allow you to feed them carrots and rub their noses.  I loved them instantly.

Trip to the North: My Trip to Ireland

After a day or so we headed on a trip to the north where we stayed with another cousin named John Joe on Donegal.  We drove from his house to Derry and then to the Giant’s Causeway, and Bushmills distillery.  I spent three years living in Derry when I was young and was anxious to see the changes.  The city was completely different.  There was no more barbed wire and army tanks. Instead there was a Peace Bridge that crossed the Foyle river.  However, there is still an undercurrent of strife that can be felt when going into the Bogside and seeing Free Derry Corner and the famous Bogside murals as well as the “London” scratched off of every sign that said “Londonderry”, the official name of the town.

The Giant’s Causeway was a geologic masterpiece. Though not as large as I expected it to be it was just as I imagined with its large stepping stone like rocks hewn naturally by the environment. It was will worth the trip to Antrim to see it.

From the Causeway we headed back to John Joe’s and stopped off at the Bushmills distillery and picked up some gifts for friends.  It is the oldest whiskey distillery in Ireland so it was well worth stopping to see it.

Once arriving back at John Joe’s we met the rest of the family for a lovely dinner.  We set out the next day toward Fairymount and stopped at the Beleek Factory and W.B. Yeats grave site.  I collect Beleek so it was nice to see how it is made and I have always been a fan of Yeats so seeing his grave site was a plus for me.

Heading South: My Trip to Ireland

After returning to Fairymount we headed south to see the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren.  The Cliffs of Moher was a spectacular site but there was nothing so surprising as the Lost Valley we drove through on the way.  It was breathtaking. The scenery was like nothing I had seen before.  Truly a wonder of nature.  The pictures do not do it justice.

We passed through the Valley heading south to Cong where the movie the Quiet Man with John Wayne was filmed.  It was a nice quaint little town with some abbey ruins and a statue in tribute to the movie.  It was fun to go there.

From Cong, we headed to Galway then to a hotel in the town of Gort where we stayed the night.  From there we headed to the Cliff’s of Moher.  The Cliffs are breathtaking. There is undoubtedly nothing like them any where else in the world.  Once again the pictures do not truly reflect the majesty of this place but I will show them to you anyway.

On the way back to Fairymount we saw the Burren and a variety of round tower and castle ruins.

Back at Fairymount: My Trip to Ireland

We spent a lot of time with family.  The best part of the whole trip was being with my husband’s extended family and my daughter who came to see us from England.  Nothing can compare to the time that we spent with them.  It was the family time that made the visit better than just a vacation.  Family is everything.

This is just a brief overview of my trip to Ireland but it is something that I love so I thought to share it with you.  If you ever get a chance to go I Highly recommend it but make sure you go with family. They make everything in life worthwhile.
