Whenever I buy clothes I get these cheesy plastic hangers.  I need the hangers but I knew there had to be a way to make them better so I decided to make my cheesy plastic hangers into elegant fabric covered Padded Coat Hangers that will treat my new clothes the way they should be treated.

With a few simple items that you probably have on hand and the enclosed pattern you too can create these terrific hangers.  Not only are they perfect for your own clothes they make great gifts too. Add a little essential oil to the padding and your clothes will leave your closet smelling awesome too.

What you will Need:

  • Pattern
  • Cheesy Plastic 16″ Hanger
  • 1 fat quarter or remnant
  • 2 4 1/2″ x 10″ pieces of batting
  • 2 Buttons
  • Ribbon
  • Thread
  • Standard Sewing supplies.

What you will Need: Padded Coat Hangers

Step 1: Padded Coat Hangers

Cut out the pattern on the fold of the fabric. You can make your own pattern for this project by tracing around your hanger and adding the thickness of your batting and your seam allowance. Wrap the batting around each side of the hanger and sew the raw edges together.  Sew the ends together and the centers together.  The plastic part of the hanger should be completely covered in batting.

Step 2: Padded Coat Hangers

With right sides together sew the bottom long seam and short sides of the fabric together using a 1/4″” seam allowance.

Step 3: Padded Coat Hangers

Turn the fabric sight sides out and press.  Press the top edge of the fabric sleeve in 1/4″” on each side.  This will serve as your seam allowance for the top part of the fabric hanger cover.  Insert the padded hanger into the fabric sleeve.

Step 4: Padded Coat Hangers

Pin or clip the top seam together.  Sew the top edges together using ladder stitch.  By using Ladder stitch you will not be able to see the stitching at all.  If you don’t know how to do ladder stitch, here is a video I found on Youtube. Take a look.

Step 5: Padded Coat Hangers

Sew a button on each end of the hanger to prevent clothes from slipping off.  Add a ribbon bow to the center for decoration and you have now completed your elegant fabric covered padded coat hangers.
