So Crafty Snowman

So Crafty Snowman

I had a few craft items laying around and thought I would try to create something out of them that would make sense.  I came up with the idea to make a Styrofoam and clay pot snowman.  I didn’t have everything I needed but I had most of the main pieces so I started with those and ultimately came up with what you see here, a so crafty snowman.

If you don’t have the items that you need for this project head over to Michael’s to find everything you need to make this project or one like it.

What you will Need:

  • 2 3″ Styrofoam balls
  • 1 small clay pot
  • Joint Compound
  • Acrylic paint
  • 1 Christmas sock
  • 1 8″ Piece of florist’s wire or a coat hanger
  • Sand Paper
  • Matte Mod Podge
  • Buttons
  • 6 tiny brads
  • 1 Very small cork
  • 2 Small wiggle eyes
  • Snowflake stickers
  • 2 Small red pompoms

Step 1: So Crafty Snowman

Slice off a small part of the Styrofoam balls to make them sit flat.  Cover the balls with a thin layer of joint compound.  Let dry.  Don’t worry if it is lumpy in spots because you are going to sand it slightly to even out the compound.

Step 2: So Crafty Snowman

Paint the clay pot in the color of your choice.  I chose a nice bright blue for my snowman.  This will serve as the body of the snowman.  Let the paint dry.  Use a second cot if necessary

Step 3: So Crafty Snowman

Take the piece of wire and fold it in half so there is a loop in the center.  Place the loop into the hole at the top of the pot.  The rest of the wire will serve as the snowman’s arms.

Step 4: So Crafty Snowman

Lightly sand the joint compound so that it is smoother but still has texture.  Paint the balls white. Seal them with a coat of matte Mod Podge.

Step 5: So Crafty Snowman

Add three small buttons to the clay pot.  Embellish the bottom of the clay pot with snowflake stickers. Cut the toe off of the socks to create the hat.  You can make the hat as long as you like. Cut the remaining part of the sock in a long length to act as the scarf.  Mine was 1″ x 12″.

Step 6: So Crafty Snowman

Decorate the head of the snowman.  Choose one of the balls and create the face any way you chose.  I chose to use small wiggle eyes for eyes, rouge for the cheeks, and black brads for the mouth.  Glue the hat to the head

Step 7: So Crafty Snowman

Place one ball on the bottom with the flat side down.  Glue the clay pot onto the ball and the head to the clay pot.  Tie the scarf around the neck and add a pompom to each wire end to act as the gloves of the snowman and you are finished.
